Faith Turns to Fear: 30 Dead as Historic Church Collapses in Amhara During Festival

October 1, 2025, when a section of the Arerti Mariam Church in Minjar Shenkora, Amhara Region, collapsed — killing at least 30 people and injuring more than 200 during a crowded morning festival.

Witnesses say thousands had gathered for the annual Virgin Mary festival, with some climbing onto wooden scaffolding erected inside the church to get a closer view of a new mural. Moments later, the structure gave way. Eyewitnesses say the structure began to shake under the crowd’s weight before collapsing with a deafening crash.

Officials confirmed that children and elderly worshippers were among the victims. Local hospitals in Debre Berhan and Addis Ababa have been overwhelmed, with dozens still in critical condition.The Ethiopian Red Cross and community volunteers continue to search the wreckage, fearing the death toll may rise.
