Ethiopian Legend Pianist Dawit Yifru Makes Historic Debut at WOMEX 2025

Ethiopian pianist and composer Dawit Yifru captivated audiences at WOMEX 2025, the world’s premier world music expo, held from October 22 to 26 in Tampere, Finland. His 45-minute showcase on October 25 at the Tampere Hall Main Auditorium marked Ethiopia’s inaugural representation at the event.

As a founding member of Roha Band and Dahlak Band, Dawit Yifru has been a pivotal figure in shaping modern Ethiopian jazz. His performance at WOMEX featured a six-piece ensemble, delivering intricate arrangements that blended psychedelic guitar lines, funky drumming, and a prominent focus on the electric piano. The setlist included selections from his recently reissued album, offering a glimpse into Ethiopia’s rich musical heritage.

Yifru’s illustrious career spans decades. As a founding member and bandleader of legendary groups such as Roha Band and Dahlak Band, he has played a crucial role in shaping the sound of modern Ethiopian music. His mastery of the piano and keyboard, combined with a deep understanding of traditional rhythms, has earned him respect both at home and abroad.

The showcase was well-received by attendees, with many praising the depth and sophistication of the performance. Dawit’s participation in WOMEX 2025 not only highlighted his enduring influence in Ethiopian music but also introduced his timeless compositions to a global audience.

Following WOMEX, Yifru and his band  continue their European tour, with performances scheduled at Sweden’s Uppsala Konsert & Kongress (UKK) and the iconic Nefertiti Jazz Club in Gothenburg.
