Addis Ababa is about to get a splash of Japanese color, cinema, and culture! Starting November 1, 2025, the Japanese Film Festival kicks off a week-long celebration that will bring the sights, sounds, and flavors of Japan to Ethiopia’s capital. The festival hosted by the Embassy of Japan in Ethiopia will be followed by the much loved Japan Culture Day on November 8, turning the city into a lively meeting point of two rich cultures.

The film festival will take place at Century Mall and Juventus Club, featuring a lineup of acclaimed Japanese films ranging from modern blockbusters to timeless classics. Among the highlights is Godzilla Minus One, a stunning tale of human courage and survival that’s sure to captivate local movie lovers. The best part? Entry is free, giving everyone a chance to dive into the world of Japanese cinema.

Then comes Japan Culture Day a full day of fun, food, and fascination. Expect martial arts shows, manga drawing workshops, live music, Japanese tea ceremonies, and, of course, authentic dishes that will make your taste buds sing. It’s a rare chance to experience Japan’s unique blend of tradition and modern life without leaving Addis.

Japanese Ambassador Mr. Shibata Hironori summed it up perfectly:

“Through film and culture, we hope to deepen the friendship between Japan and Ethiopia.”
