In a candid interview with reporter Mentesnot Nuguse, Nebyou Indris, one of Ethiopia’s most compelling actors, shared his insights on the journey and progress of the country’s film industry—a journey he says he’s proud and happy to be part of. Raised in Jigjiga, Nebyou Indris initially pursued football before studying mechanical engineering at Adama Science and Technology University, where he also worked as a brand ambassador. His debut film, Tefetari, co-directed with the late Debebe Eshetu, marked the beginning of a career defined by ambition, discipline, and an unwavering love for storytelling.

Nebyou Indris said in the interview that while the Ethiopian film industry has faced challenges—particularly financial constraints and limited resources—he is encouraged by its steady growth and the passion driving a new generation of storytellers. He and his team helped revive the country’s thriller genre after a decade-long lull, proving that audiences still crave suspenseful, high-quality films despite social media’s short-form dominance.

He expressed optimism about how technology, especially AI, is opening doors to more efficient production processes while emphasizing that human emotion remains the soul of cinema. Indris also highlighted the rising potential of streaming platforms as a profitable future for filmmakers and investors.

For aspiring creatives, he advised confidence, persistence, and staying true to their vision. Above all, Indris said he is proud of how far Ethiopian cinema has come—and excited for where it’s going next.
